Homecoming: Queens
Pep for the Trees of Flushing Meadows Corona Park
Homecoming:Queens is a public art event that reimagines a traditional sports pep rally as a joyful celebration of environmental resilience and community connection. Instead of cheering for a team, we’ll gather to cheer on some of New York City’s most valuable assets: trees!
Taking place in Flushing Meadows Corona Park (FMCP), the flagship park of Queens, participants will learn about and help celebrate the Park’s iconic trees, as well as get the opportunity to help parade, pep rally for and plant a new tree, contributing to the rich legacy of tree biodiversity here in FMCP. This event will start at the Unisphere on Sunday, September 21st at 2pm.
More about Homecoming: Queens
Homecoming is a public art project by artist Amanda Lovelee, that transforms the American pep rally into a joyful celebration of environmental resilience. Merging art, science, and community, the project invites us to cheer—not for a team, but for the future of our environment. As climate change is weighing on us, we must remember no revolution happened without joy.
At Homecoming: Queens we will pep the diverse and magical trees of Flushing Meadows Corona Park with the help of artists, a local marching band, NYC parks team, and arborists. You will get to find and meet a few of the park's most historic trees and leave them words of encouragement while learning about how they each contribute to the biodiversity of one of the cites largest parks. We will conclude our gathering with a parade for our new tree neighbor around the park with lots of joy, raising our shovels and voices as we plant our tree together.
