Overview

The Alliance for Flushing Meadows Corona Park (AFMCP) conceived Vision 2050 to provide a roadmap for the next 25 years of Flushing Meadows Corona Park (FMCP). It has four primary goals:

  1. Create a vision for how FMCP will best serve its surrounding community.

  2. Convert the influx of visitors for professional sports and other special events into more frequent users of the park and supporters of AFMCP.

  3. Position AFMCP to secure funding from local stakeholders, foundations, and government entities for general operations, programs, and capital improvements.

  4. Establish a master plan framework for FMCP that will meet short and long term community aspirations, ensure environmental protection of the site and surrounding neighborhoods, and chart a course of action for future capital improvements of the park land and public facilities and new programs and services for visitors.

The programmatic landscape and infrastructure needs of FMCP have changed radically since NYC Parks initiated the last Strategic Framework Plan in 2004. The creation of the Alliance for FMCP in 2015 expanded the capacity for non-governmental projects in the park. Additionally, FMCP, along with its surrounding communities, have garnered sustained interest from developers exploring generationally transformative projects, most recently in Willets Point, on Flushing Creek, and in the park itself. Due to an influx of residents–Queens receiving more than double the number of migrants than any other NYC borough in 2023–and a heightened appreciation for urban green spaces post-pandemic, the need for equitable access to and investment in our City’s parks is crucial. It is imperative that the Alliance continue to advocate for Flushing Meadows Corona Park amidst these changes.

Implementation

Phase One of Vision 2025 was Data Collection and Analysis. An initial three-month study focused on stakeholder engagement conducted by the Center for an Urban Future (CUF) began in Fall 2024. From over 30 interviews with urban planners, administrators, policymakers, and other experts, a report containing 20 concrete ideas for the future of FMCP, “The Park Queens Deserves” launched in August 2025.

The full report, along with links to extensive local press coverage on its recommendations, can be found on CUF’s website.

Phase Two, which will be shaped by the data collected and analyzed in Phase One, focuses on Programming Development and Project Feasibility, anticipated to span 2026 and into 2027.

Building on the CUF study, Phase Two seeks to identify community-first public programming opportunities and park improvements that are responsive to the park’s users. AFMCP is currently soliciting proposals from community engagement consultants to conduct this study, which will encompass all of the major language and community groups surrounding the park. $200,000 is budgeted for this project.

The findings from Phase Two will be synthesized and integrated into a final report to be presented to the AFMCP board and publicly to the FMCP community, with all reporting and analysis to be completed by April 2027.

Phase Three will be a Master Planning Process, constructing a framework for long-term capital planning in the park, implementing programmatic recommendations from Phase Two and initiating park improvements. This work will take place in 2028 and 2029.
